The MANY benefits of curcumin
A simple way to 'spice' up your life
Written by Orla Ni Bhriain
Lately we all have a lot more time on our hands, and perhaps a lot more time than normal for self-examination. In recent weeks magazines, newspapers, Instagram and beyond have been filled with stories about celebrity ‘transformations’ during lockdown, and the latest home fitness trends and beauty regimes, in the absence of gyms and beauty salons.
Investing in a good beauty regime should never be about pressure from the media, or social media even. However; the truth is - our appearance, or how we feel about ourselves, can really impact our self- confidence. With that in mind self-love is probably the most important kind of love we can give ourselves particularly after the stress and impact the last few months has had. One good way to do that is to invest in a natural beauty regime that can have multiple benefits for our bodies, and cater to our vanities at the same time.
Health from the inside out
Who may have heard of turmeric - a spice commonly used and raved about in recent years for all of its benefits. Having been used in Ayurvedic medicine for years, its history and uses have been present for as many as 4,000 years [1]. The American National Centre for Biology Information states that ‘modern medicine has begun to recognise its importance, as indicated by the over 3000 publications dealing with turmeric that came out within the last 25 years’ [2]. According to the New York Times, The Nutrition Business Journal has reported that in 2018 alone, sales of turmeric products in the United States amounted to $328 million, which was more than seven times the amount sold in the previous decade [3].
Curcumin is the very important little compound that’s within the turmeric root. Truth Origins’ Dr Harrison Weisinger says ‘it is actually curcumin that is responsible for the majority of known biological effects that have been attributed to turmeric.’ Dr. Weisinger attributes the benefits of curcumin to its chemical makeup, he says, ‘it is curcumin’s unique chemical structure, with its different binding capacity, that enables it to act upon various biological ‘targets’. These targets include inflammatory mediators, growth factors, enzymes, carrier proteins, metal ions, tumour suppressors, transcription factors, oncoproteins and cellular nucleic acid’ [4].
The compound may also have a wider range range of benefits - a recent study by researchers at The University of South Australia looking into the efficacy of treating Alzheimer's disease with nanoparticles of curcumin, found that ‘in animal experiments nanoparticles containing curcumin not only prevents cognitive deterioration but also reverses the damage.’ thus paving the way for further trials to monitor the benefits of curcumin in Alzheimer's disease [5]. Co-author of the study published in March 2020 Professor Xin-Fu Zhou, a UniSA neuroscientist, says ‘Curcumin is a compound that suppresses oxidative stress and inflammation, both key pathological factors for Alzheimer's’ [6].

Truth discovered the beneficial properties of curcumin because both our founders, Dr Harry and Trent, have been huge fans of implementing it into their self-care routines for ultimate recovery for years! This is why ‘Recover’ was created – a blend of CBD and curcumin. For a more potent formula - without CBD - Truth Origins (our sister brand) has formulated a best-seller, VITALITY Liquid Curcumin, but more on this below!
Whilst curcumin and the proper absorption method hosts most of the incredible benefits of the plant, there are also other ways you can add turmeric into your at-home beauty regime and take advantage of it topically or as a tasty little nurturing warming brew. Let’s explore these now!

Facial remedy
According to allure.com ‘studies have shown that curcumin, a chemical compound found in turmeric, can decrease UV damage (it's a natural antioxidant) and clear up acne (it's also antibacterial) when applied to skin’ [7]. Hello Glow.co have recommended a recipe for a turmeric based facial scrub, which they say is ideal for acne-prone skin [8]. Ingredients are: 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric, 3 teaspoons almond milk, and 3 teaspoons baking soda. They suggest mixing all of the ingredients together in a small bowl and stirring to combine, followed by application over clean, damp skin with fingertips starting with your chin and working upward in small circles. To then rinse and follow with moisturiser.
Food for your hair
Over at Refinery29.com, they recommend adding turmeric to your hair regime, and creating a mask made from Turmeric and Olive oil [9]. They suggest adding turmeric to olive oil and massaging the mixture into your scalp. The mask should be left on for 20 minutes and then rinsed out with a natural (surfactant-free) shampoo. They say the mixture can help ‘keep your hair healthy and treats a host of scalp conditions, especially dandruff.’
Body scrub
Soapqueen.com recommends using a turmeric and ginger scrub [10]. Ingredients include: 30 oz. Sugar, 2 tsp. Turmeric Powder, 2 oz. Olive Oil, 2 oz. Natural Castile Liquid Soap Base, 0.6 oz. Ginger Essential Oil and 0.3 oz. Optiphen. Soapqueen.com says that this recipe when used has a ‘medium amount of scrub that’s great for the body but would be harsh on the face’. They also recommend the addition of olive oil because it provides moisturising properties, while the Natural Castile Liquid Soap Base makes sure the scrub washes away cleanly. They say that without the liquid soap, you may experience some staining from the turmeric.
Hug in a mug
You may have seen this in your local “trendy” café marketed as ‘Golden tea’ which is essentially turmeric powder mixed with spices and usually milk and honey, but the blend changes from place to place! It is a delicious and warming drink that has been used in India as an old remedy for years [11].
